The Dime Store Detroit
/When you are looking for a lively, tasty restaurant that will satisfy a wide variety of appetites, The Dime Store must be at the top of your list. A recent visit with our college aged children did not disappoint.
Although there was an hour long wait during a recent visit, we fortunately were in no rush and there is plenty to look at in the gorgeously rehabilitated Chrysler House on 719 Griswold. It’s updated art-deco design and breathtaking glass atrium left us plenty to gaze upon and discuss. Which parts were updated? Who were some of the original tenants?
The Dime Store restaurant on the first floor is named for one of the original tenants of the building, the Dime Bank. In fact, the building was named the Dime Building off and on through the early 2000’s. The decor of the restaurant is a wonderful combination of old and new-reflecting both the tradition of the early and mid 20th century with posters reflecting the time, yet in a bright, modern eating area with the bar area a central feature, serving craft beverages of all sorts.
The food of course is rewarding and has variety for both vegetarians and carnivores. Our family ordered an omelette, which while satisfying, was the least interesting plate, with nothing to really distinguish it from a coney island omelette we could have gotten across the street for half the price.
The Veggie Benny was perfect however- the perfect consistency, the perfect amount, and outstanding flavor, with an item substitution handled hassle-free.
Another amazing stand out was the Ginger Eggnog French Toast. Make no mistake, there is probably very little healthy about this dish, but for the splurge or post intense workout meal or a split with a healthier dish will leave you enraptured. The brioche and candied ginger were clever additions and added to the flavor rewards of this dish.
I had the Grilled Salmon sandwich and was rewarded with salmon grilled to perfection and a subtle, refreshing dill sauce on a brioche bun that was delicious.
A small disappointment was that the service was stretched thin and a disappointment only as far as getting a refill on water or coffee. But given the difficulties that restaurants are under these days, it was easily overlooked. I do believe that is the best way to enjoy a dining experience on most occasions, but for sure during these gloomy covid days, is allowing as much grace as possible for all of those who are working so hard to provide comfort and cheer for the rest of us.
I look forward to returning and I am sure I will not have to ask twice for my other family members to accompany me. What more can I ask for?
